SAFE GUN STORAGE LAWS
Unsecured firearms pose safety risks, particularly to children. When guns are not stored safely or securely and they are accessible to minors, the risk of death or injury is a reality. Each year hundreds of thousands of unsecured firearms are stolen from homes, vehicles, and individuals. These guns often find their way to the underground market where many of them are used to commit violent crimes. Most states have some form of safe gun storage or child access prevention laws in place that criminalize gun owners who fail to keep their firearms secure. The states listed below have criminal and/or civil penalties for gun owners who fail to meet safe storage requirements. The National Center for Firearms Removal can assist by accepting firearms for removal that are not being safely or securely stored.
